Event – The Sikh Family – Understanding Domestic Abuse

About this event

Date and Time: Wednesday 27th July, 8pm-9.30pm

Sikh Women’s Aid is a charity set up by women from the Sikh community to support survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

In 2021, the organisation conducted the first in depth survey of the prevalence of domestic and sexual abuse in the Sikh and Panjabi community. The findings were published in November 2021 in a report called From Her Kings are Born.

• 80% of respondents to the survey were female. Whilst we do not deal with male survivors, we do actively signpost those who present to the service.

• 70% of respondents said they have experienced domestic abuse (a further 5% said possibly).

• 47% of abuse was committed by a partner.

• 24% of abuse was from parents.

• 19% specifically from mother-in-laws.
