Webinar – Connect Centre – It Was Powerful Because It Was Named

Date and time

Wed, 7 December 2022, 16:00 – 17:00 GMT

This webinar draws on findings from the DAHLIA-19 study in relation to national public messaging about domestic abuse during the Covid-19 pandemic in four countries: the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa and Australia. From the outset of the pandemic, attempts to curb and impede transmission of Covid-19 led governments around the globe to enact public health measures and restrictions which required citizens to remain at home and preclude contact with those outside their household units. Paradoxically this attempt to keep people safe actually increased the risk of harm for victims/survivors of domestic abuse.

This webinar presents the findings of an Irish Case Study on public messaging during this time and considers it alongside findings from the other three participating countries. Four themes were identified from the data: (1) Top-down: National media messaging; (2) Top-down: Political leadership; (3) Traditional media vs. social media and (4) Bottom-up messaging: Localised, community-based messaging. In so doing, strengths and learning which could potentially inform future national public messaging initiatives were revealed.
