News – Rail to Refuge scheme extended

Womens Aid has announced that their Rail to Refuge scheme, which enables survivors of domestic abuse to travel to refuge for free, is being extended until the end of March 2021. “This is thanks to the generosity of the Rail Delivery Group, the membership body for the rail industry.

Domestic abuse has worsened during the pandemic but Rail to Refuge has been a lifeline for many people experiencing abuse having already helped 836 survivors, including 210 children, access safety. On average, four survivors a day, have been using the scheme. The free travel it provides can be a lifeline for women experiencing abuse, who often do not have access to cash. 63% of survivors who used Rail to Refuge, would not have travelled if the journey wasn’t paid for.

Today’s extension will help hundreds more women take the train, for free, to reach a safe refuge.

➡️ To access the scheme, survivors need to have a confirmed refuge place through our services or one our Rail to Refuge partner organisations: Imkaan, @WelshWomensAid, Scottish Women’s Aid or @RespectUK. If you are experiencing abuse and need support, please use the link below to reach our direct services or find your local participating service, they will be able to support you. If you are referred to refuge, Rail to Refuge could help you get there.

➡️ If you would like to support Rail to Refuge, please share this information today to let women know they are not alone and support is available. If you are able, please consider making a donation to help survivors access lifesaving support and reach refuge using the link below.”
